Grooming Terminology
This page will be an ongoing "In Development" list of the various terms used in the Grooming Industry and their descriptions. Pictures will also be used to help you visualize the terms wherever possible.
Ear Plucking
A term used for the removal of hair in the ear canal.
Quick
The term used for the blood vessel that runs through the center of each of the dog's toenails.
Coat Type & Length
Coat type for ISB products: When we talk about our Iv San Bernard products being formulated for the type of coat type, we are not only concerned about the type of coat your dog has (coarse, silky, curly, wire, smooth, etc.), but also the length the DNA has said "this dog is supposed to have this amount of hair and length". The type of products and amount we use are based on these two things. This is why your Standard Poodle who is kept short, will use more product than a naturally short haired dog, like a Boxer.
Coat type in groomer words is the variety of coat textures - silky, coarse, curly, wire, smooth, etc.
Coat length in groomer words is how long the coat is when groomed.
Here at Pooch Pawlor, we use all 3 to help us find the best products for that particular dog.
Cuts
Puppy Cut
The term originates from a Poodle trim. The "Puppy Cut" is a trim used on a Poodle under 12 months to prep their coat for the mature show dog trims with poms, bracelets, and jacket.
"Puppy Cut" a.k.a. "shave down"
In pet grooming, these terms are generalized terms for "the same length all over the body". Moreover, the better term for this cut would be the Poodle's "Kennel Cut".
"Lamb Cut/Pants and Jacket"
A type of Poodle cut. This cut has a shorter body and longer legs with/without the shaved face and feet.
"Lazy Lamb"
A modification of the Lamb Cut which brings the short body cut down to the elbows and down the rear of the dog with a stylized head to balance the body.
"Teddy Bear"
The front is clipped shorter to the elbows, but the rear is left higher to give it a rounded appearance. The Teddy Bear cut also has a rounded head and short ears to give the 🧸🐻🧸 look.
